Proceeding contribution from Lord Skelmersdale (Conservative) in the House of Lords on Tuesday, 31 March 2009. It occurred during Committee of the Whole House (HL) and Debate on bill on Postal Services Bill [HL].

Postal Services Bill [HL]

As I understand it, although I am perfectly willing to be corrected, when the agreement of April 2008 was set up, part of that agreement was that if you were already in the DC scheme, you would continue in the DC scheme. Sorry, I have got it the wrong way around. If you were on the DB scheme, I mean, you would continue on the DB scheme as long as your employment lasted. If, however, you were a new entrant, it would be a direct contribution, which is of course a different cup of tea. What I have been trying to talk about is small amounts of money accumulated under the DB scheme, which, in part, are the responsibility of the new government scheme and will then become, for the rest of the career, the responsibility of the Post Office scheme. I was trying to find a way in which to roll the two into one; that seems a perfectly sensible suggestion, even if the Minister does not think that it is practical. Perhaps we could both consider the matter further. In the mean time, I beg leave to withdraw the amendment. Amendment 50A withdrawn.
