Proceeding contribution from Ed Miliband (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 23 April 2009. It occurred during Budget debate on Amendment of the law.
Amendment of the law
No, it was correcting an anomaly in the tax system regarding the position of married couples compared with other couples. That is the explanation. If the hon. Gentleman wants to abandon his married couples allowance today, I am happy for him to do so. I think that it is right to support children through the child tax credit. The other problem for the shadow Chancellor arises from his proposals on tax credits, which have not got much attention. He says that he wants to cut the number of people who get tax credits. When he was on the "Today" programme a few weeks ago, having trouble finding what areas he would cut, he said:""We raised the question, for example, of whether in-work benefits, tax credits, should go to people on incomes of over £50,000."" Presumably, he wants to cut tax credits for those people.
