Proceeding contribution from Lord McKenzie of Luton (Labour) in the House of Lords on Tuesday, 9 March 2010. It occurred during Debate on bill on Child Poverty Bill.

Child Poverty Bill

My Lords, I am grateful to all noble Lords for their support for the government amendments. In brief response to the noble Baroness, Lady Thomas, provision will be dealt with through the strategy. The Secretary of State is required to identify measures to support those people. Of course, there is not only the strategy but the annual report that will flow from it. Our starting position was that health should cover mental as well as physical health, but the consensus seems to be that specifying it in the Bill might be more helpful. Notwithstanding that, we recognise the big challenge that we have to help people with mental health conditions better to access the labour market and enjoy all the other benefits of society.
