Proceeding contribution from David TC Davies (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 1 December 2010. It occurred during Grand Committee proceedings (HC) on Comprehensive Spending Review.

Comprehensive Spending Review

My hon. Friend makes an excellent point, because the official figures of course do not take into account the public sector pension deficit, private finance initiatives, things such as Metronet or debts accrued by Railtrack. An independent study has shown that the actual figure is about twice the official figure. Many hon. Members wish to speak, so I will not go on. I could go on—[Hon. Members: ““Yes, go on.””] No; I always think that in most situations it is best to leave people wanting more. I assure hon. Members that I and everyone else on the Government Benches are committed to getting the deficit under control, starting to repay the debt in around 2014-15 and handing over to the next Government an economy that is in good shape. We hope that the next Government, whoever they are, take note of that and do not ruin it.
