Proceeding contribution from Geraint Davies (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 1 December 2010. It occurred during Grand Committee proceedings (HC) on Comprehensive Spending Review.
Comprehensive Spending Review
My right hon. Friend is making a strong case to show that the deficit was the cost of avoiding a depression. Does he agree that supporting the banks was not bailing them out, but taking a public stake in them at a time when their prices were low and they needed our support? That stake will appreciate over time and will be paid back more than once downstream as economic growth proceeds. It was therefore a good investment, yet it is portrayed by some Government Members as just bailing out the banks, which is outrageous.
