Proceeding contribution from Baroness Sherlock (Labour) in the House of Lords on Thursday, 13 October 2011. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee proceeding on Welfare Reform Bill.

Welfare Reform Bill

I thank the Minister very much for that information. To press this point, as he will appreciate, the reason for asking about transition in what appears to be a question about cost is that different orders of migration have very different costs. He said that he had one set of assumptions, he has now reworked them and as a result he finds that he has £300 million left over. I understand that. I would like him to reassure the Committee that he has not changed the assumptions on transition, for example, in order to free up the £300 million. I am sure that he has not—I have a horribly suspicious mind which comes of my years in the Treasury—but I will be grateful if he can reassure me and bring me back into a land of happiness.
