Proceeding contribution from Anne McGuire (Labour) in the House of Commons on Monday, 16 April 2012. It occurred during Debate on bill on Finance (No. 4) Bill.
Finance (No. 4) Bill
Frankly, the increase in the state pension came about because inflation was at 5.2% in September and the Government could not get out of it. I do not know whether the hon. Gentleman worked for Grant Thornton when he was a tax accountant, but Mike Warburton of Grant Thornton said:"ββThe Chancellor is allowing age allowances to wither on the vine. He is effectively phasing them out but there is always a price to pay for simplicity.ββ" The burden will fall on pensioners with below average incomes. Those are not our words, but those of an eminent firm of chartered accountants.
