Agriculture: Plastics

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, whether her Department is taking steps to incentivise farmers to switch from single-use plastic mulching films to certified soil-biodegradable alternatives through the (a) Sustainable Farming Initiative, (b) Farming Investment Fund and (c) other Defra schemes.

Answer

No steps have been taken. While we consider there may be niche applications, generally we do not support the use of biodegradable plastics.
