Income Tax: Pensioners

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what steps HM Revenue and Customs is taking to (a) identify for each of the last four financial years those pensioners who may have been overcharged income tax due to incorrect state pension data, (b) notify affected individuals, and (c) issue automatic refunds in such cases.

The HMRC Permanent Secretary will shortly be writing to the chairs of the Treasury Select Committee and Public Accounts Committee to provide an update on this matter. The government is aware of the issue raised and is working to resolve it.
