Motor Vehicles: Personal Records
- Question
-
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether her Department considers a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), when linked to location data or account information, to constitute personal data.
- Answer
-
The UK General Data Protection Regulation defines personal data as information that relates to an individual who can be identified or is identifiable, either directly or indirectly, from one or more identifiers or factors specific to the individual. Whether a potential identifier, such as a VIN or location data, actually identifies an individual depends on the context.
If it is uncertain whether particular data is personal data, as a matter of good practice, it should still be treated as personal data.
