Written question asked by Lord Hylton (Crossbench), in the House of Lords. It was answered by Baroness Warsi (Conservative) on Wednesday, 27 March 2013.

Hungary

Question

To ask Her Majesty’s Government what communications they are having with the Government of Hungary, the European Commission and the Council of Europe concerning (1) Klubradio, (2) amendments to the Hungarian constitution, and (3) the independence of the Hungarian Central Bank; and whether they expect positive results in conformity with the key values of the European Union.[HL6417]

Answer

Membership of the EU places obligations on member states to ensure the highest standards of democracy and fundamental freedoms and we welcome the Hungarian Prime Minister's and the Hungarian Government's recently expressed commitment to EU law and values, and their offer to work constructively with both the European Commission and the Venice Commission to address all outstanding concerns. We continue to watch developments closely, and to maintain open and frank discussions with the Hungarian Government at all levels on a range of issues.
