Mr. Willis: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many PhD students were in their first year of research
and taught courses in UK universities in the latest year for which the information is available and in each of the previous 10
years, broken down by (i) subject and (ii) domicile. [88687]
Mr. Mudie: The information available, covering the years 1994-95 to 1998-99, is shown in the following table. Information for
previous years is not held centrally.

Mr. Boswell: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will make a statement on recent developments in
Government action to widen participation in further education. [85425]
Mr. Mudie: We are committed to widening participation in further education and have taken action to achieve this.
We have secured an excellent financial settlement for further education which will enable significant progress to be made towards
securing an extra 700,000 students in further education in 2001-02 compared to 1997-98. This expansion is principally focused on
widening participation to those who have not traditionally taken advantage of learning opportunities. We have also announced a new
Further Education Student Support package, targeted at those most in need, which will come into force from September.
The introduction of the University for Industry and Individual Learning Accounts, from next year, will both assist in removing
barriers to learning and widening participation in further education.

Candidates are not compelled to register with an awarding body to say they are working towards an NVQ. Their first contact with an

Mr. Cotter: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what steps he will take to ensure that the training provided
by the expanded New Start programme will target the needs of industry. [61173]
Mr. Mudie: We are encouraging employers to play a full part in all New Start partnerships, which aim to re-engage young people in
learning, often through work related activities.
They will also have opportunities to influence the local strategic Lifelong Learning Partnerships to be established next year.

Mr. Mudie: Life science courses are included in the `biological sciences' category in the statistics collected by the Higher
Education Statistics Agency but cannot be identified separately. The latest available information is for students who qualified in
1997 and relates to first destinations as reported by 31 December 1997. The table below gives a complete list of occupants entered
