The UK military exercises regularly with allies and partners across the Indo-Pacific. Over the next twelve months, we will be conducting bilateral and multilateral exercises with Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore.

The UK led Joint Expeditionary Force provides, through collaboration with the partnering nations, an increased profile and presence in the Baltic Sea and High North region across multiple domains. Both operationally and through collective training, the UK's engagement in the coming years will be characterised by smaller scale, but more frequent activities in co-operation with all regional partners, of which Estonia is an important member. The opportunities and frequency of participation by Estonia is being reviewed through regular consultations at both the political and military level.

Exercise SEA BREEZE concluded on 12 July 2019.

The UK assets participating in Exercise Dynamic Mongoose 19 are due to conclude their deployment on 12 July 2019.

UK Defence benefits from considerable engagement with the Australian Armed Forces reflecting the strength of the defence relationship between the two nations. Our records show the number of direct joint training exercises that the UK has carried out with the Royal Australian Armed Forces in each of the last five years is as follows:

Each year UK Armed Forces conduct a considerable number of exercises with their US counterparts, some single service, some joint. The information requested is not held centrally, but is being compiled. I will write to the hon. Member with the information shortly.

Participation in Exercise Red Flag in 2014 was important in maintaining close ties, from strategic to tactical levels, with the USA and Australia, and provided a realistic and testing environment for coalition training for both aircraft and ground based force elements.

Participation in Exercise Anatolian Eagle in 2014 at Konya Air base in Turkey afforded UK personnel with the experience of deploying and operating alongside NATO and other potential coalition allies. This includes exposure to the complexities of operating large numbers of aircraft from the same base and in missions of large airborne formations.

Between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2012 (the latest date for which data are available), three UK regular armed forces personnel died while on live firing exercises, two in 2011 and one in 2012. Data for 2013 will be published in March 2014. All three of the fatalities were from the Army.

Since 1996, the Army's ‘Land Accident Prevention and Investigation Team’ (LAIT) has investigated military accidents or incidents which cause or have the potential to cause death, serious injury or equipment loss. The LAIT makes recommendations to ensure appropriate remedial action is taken and to reduce the risk of recurrence. The LAIT is required to follow up recommendations within eight weeks to ensure remedial action has been taken.

Each of the three fatalities detailed above has been the subject of such procedures and the recommendations have been implemented.

Alongside any action taken by the LAIT, police, Health and Safety Executive or Coroner, the appropriate chain of command can convene a detailed service inquiry if anything additional can be learned to prevent recurrence.

All three single services have robust lesson exploitation processes to disseminate best practice.

The Urban Warrior 5 trial seeks to explore how various simulation methods can be used to aid decision making for major combat operations. Urban Warrior 5 also provided an opportunity to further develop the effectiveness of an Armoured Infantry Company Group as part of the new Army 2020 structure. Evaluation of the trial is still in progress and it is expected that the results will not be available before autumn 2013.

The Joint Warrior tri-service and multinational exercises prepares UK forces for contingent operations through integration of participating air, land and maritime forces, and interoperability with our allies.

The most recent exercise saw the validation of UK's High Readiness Brigades and of the joint forces headquarters (the UK's standing joint operational contingent command); the preparation of UK mine warfare battle staff for operations in the Gulf; and the preparation of the UK Response Force Task Group for the annual Cougar deployment.

Exercise Mountain Dragon is the primary output of the Air Battlespace Training Centre (ABTC) at RAF Waddington. The exercise uses demanding and realistic scenarios, drawn directly from the operational theatre, which replicate current procedures, rules of engagement and platform capabilities. This cannot be replicated by live training and makes a vital contribution to preparing forces for deployment.
