The figures in Table 1 show the number of subject profiles added to the National DNA Database (NDNAD) by English and Welsh police forces and British Transport police in each month between 16 October 2009 and 30 November 2009, broken down by the police force which took the sample.The number of subject profiles held on the NDNAD is not the same as the number of individuals. A proportion of DNA profiles held on the NDNAD are replicates, that is, a profile for a person has been loaded on more than one occasion (this may be because the person gave different names, or different versions of their name, on separate arrests, or because of upgrading of profiles). It is currently estimated that 13.8 per cent. of subject profiles held on the NDNAD are replicates. The replication rate of 13.8 per cent. should only be applied over the entire database however, as the replication rate for individual police forces varies considerably. The presence of these replicate profiles on the NDNAD does not impact on the effectiveness and integrity of the database.

The figures in table 1 show the number of subject profiles added to the National DNA Database (NDNAD) by English and Welsh forces and the British Transport Police in each month between 9 July 2009 and 15 October 2009, broken down by the police force which took the sample.The figures in table 2 show the number of crime scene profiles added to the NDNAD by English and Welsh forces and the British Transport Police in each month between 9 July 2009 and 15 October 2009, broken down by the police force which collected the sample.The number of subject profiles held on the NDNAD is not the same as the number of individuals. A proportion of DNA profiles held on the NDNAD are replicates, that is, a profile for a person has been loaded on more then one occasion (this may be because the person gave different names, or different versions of their name, on separate arrests, or because of upgrading of profiles). It is currently estimated that 13.8 per cent. of subject profiles held on the NDNAD are replicates. Ministry of Defence officials are currently collating and validating the data needed to answer these questions. I will write to the hon. Member before the summer recess. Substantive answer from Kevan Jones to Jenny Willott:"I undertook to write to you in response to your Parliamentary Questions on 14 July, (Official Report, column 270W) and 21 July (Official Report, column 1197W) on existing and planned MOD databases which contain personal information on members of the public.""The following table provides details of the main MOD databases which hold personal information on members of the public. In some of these databases the majority of information held will relate to members of the Services or MOD civilian personnel however we have included them as there may also be information relating to the public e.g. an unsuccessful applicant for a vacancy."

"There are also a small number of databases whose details are being withheld for the purposes of safeguarding national security or whose disclosure would prejudice the prevention or detection of crime." "All information is collected and retained in accordance with the Data Protection Act. The following table provides details of known future MOD databases, subject to the same exemptions as above, which will hold personal information on members of the public."

[holding answer 9 September 2009]: In January 2006, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) issued guidelines for Chief Officers on the retention of police national computer, DNA and fingerprint records in England and Wales. The guidelines included an "Exceptional Case Procedure" covering consideration of requests for the removal of DNA profiles from the National DNA Database (NDNAD). The guidelines were published on the Home Office and ACPO websites in 2006, where they remain.Information on the Exceptional Case Procedure was also published in the NDNAD annual report 2006-07 on pages 23-24.
