That this House notes that Indonesia continues its aggressive and illegal occupation of East Timor in defiance of 10 UN resolutions; that plans are in train for the sale of Scorpion tanks, as well as 16 additional Hawk aircraft, by United Kingdom manufacturers to Indonesia; that Scorpion tanks could well be used by the Indonesian authorities against the Timorese resistance and against peaceful demonstrations elsewhere; that the United Kingdom will soon become Indonesia's foremost arms supplier; and calls upon the British Government to desist from its current policy in this regard and specifically not to issue a licence to Alvis for the export of Scorpion tanks to Indonesia.

That this House is shocked by the death of Ayhan Eser, a 15 year-old Kurd, who was shot in the back and killed whilst fly-posting in Hanover on 1st July; is concerned by the German government's refusal to allow entry to Germany on 25th June of several people of different nationalities wishing to attend a peaceful rally protesting at the persecution of Kurds by the Turkish government; believes these incidents are linked to a series of measures taken by the Kohl government to give political support and military aid to the Turkish regime; is aware that most of the 1000 Kurdish villages destroyed by the Turkish armed forces in the past four years have been scorched or flattened by guns, tanks and other military equipment or skills supplied by Germany; and calls for an international ban on the sale of arms to Turkey in view of its continued repression and denial of basic human rights to the Kurdish people.
