My Lords, I must declare an interest as deputy president of the Countryside Alliance. As Prince Charles has said, the countryside is a delicately woven tapestry: start pulling out the threads and the whole will unravel very rapidly. In the Yorkshire Dales, the Cumbrian Fells and the hills of Scotland...

My Lords, I declare an interest in that I am the deputy chairman of the Countryside Alliance, which has been carrying out a major exercise on fly-tipping, an important part of the Bill. I agree with my noble friend Lady Byford that this all seems a bit far away from...

My Lords, I should declare an interest as the deputy president of the Countryside Alliance. I shall declare an interest also as the first chairman of the British Greyhound Racing Fund when we come to consider those matters. This amendment is quite unnecessary. Defra is already drawing up a code...

My Lords, I am particularly interested in subsection (2)(c) of my noble friend’s amendment, on the, "““identification of greyhounds employed for racing purposes””." One reason why I was eased out from running the Greyhound Racing Fund was that I wanted to be absolutely certain that the dogs could be properly...

My Lords, I am quite certain that the noble Baroness is genuine in her reply, but could we see some positive action? Why go on spending £18 million on the unelected regional councils in eight areas? The money is used to override the county councils’ planning decisions. The Government are taking powers away from the local people in all 34 counties and they will have to pay for it through their council tax.

My Lords, I thank the Minister for his Answer. It proves that the Department for Work and Pensions plus the Minister for Welfare Reform have not done a great deal over a period in which the Prime Minister himself said that there were 1 million people claiming incapacity benefit who wanted to work. The situation will not be made any easier for the Government with a backdrop of a slowing economy, rising unemployment and the unprecedented funding crisis in the National Health Service. All the same, I wish that the Government could do more.

My Lords, we are all grateful to the noble Earl, Lord Peel, because this debate has come just in time. Unless something is done now, we are going to lose the red squirrel completely. I think it was 86 years ago that Thorburn’s classic work on the mammals of Great Britain was able...

My Lords, I thank the Minister for that reply. Without being slightly churlish, however, I feel that it lacks a certain sympathy. All the speculation about amalgamation is unsettling for lady officers. They play a vital part in the work of the force, and it is time that the question of amalgamation was laid to rest so that they can get on with the business of arresting criminals.

My Lords, I must declare an interest. I am chairman of the Melton museum. One third of our exhibition deals with Stilton cheese. Does the Minister realise that deep offence is felt throughout the Vale of Belvoir at the Food Standards Agency’s investigation of the level of salt in Stilton cheese, which is an age-old recipe, when it should be dealing with the amount of salt and fat in junk foods? Does the Minister realise also that salt is added to Stilton to drive down the moisture content and slow the development of the bacteria? Of all blue cheeses, Stilton has the least salt in it.

My Lords, I thank the Minister for that reply, but it is not really good enough. There is an explosion of moles throughout England. On 6 September, licensed pest controllers could use only Phostoxin. It costs six times as much and is 10 times less efficient than worms dressed with strychnine. I hope that the derogation will continue.
