Former Scotland Secretary Baroness Liddell, who sat on the Philip review panel, said that she was misled. Given that, surely the Secretary of State must support the Chinook Justice Campaign families’ long-standing pleas for a fresh inquiry into why their family members were put on that particular flight?

I should declare that I am very close to some of the families who lost family members on that Chinook, as the hon. Lady well knows. I am sympathetic to the point that she makes. We are looking at this matter at the moment. I have to be very careful about my involvement, but I will make sure that the questions she raised are answered, and I agree to meet her.

Our deepest sympathies remain with the bereaved families of this tragic accident. The investigation into Chinook ZD576 was led by the RAF, who asked the Air Accident Investigation Branch (a part of the Department for Transport) to assist the investigation. AAIB files and documents associated with this investigation were transferred to the RAF Historical Files Section in 2018.

On this 30th anniversary of the terrible tragedy of the Mull of Kintyre Chinook crash, our thoughts remain with the families of those who lost their lives, and with all the communities affected by that devastating loss.
I welcome the engagement that took place in December 2025, when representatives from the Chinook Justice Campaign met with three Ministry of Defence Ministers and the Victims' Minister.
The Honourable Member will be aware that this matter is now subject to ongoing legal proceedings. The UK Government is committed to engaging fully in that process, and I hope she will understand that I am not able to comment further until that work has concluded.

The Chinook Justice Campaign have submitted a formal claim to the Ministry of Defence for a Judicial Review of our decision to reject the demand for an independent judge-led inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
This process is ongoing and our focus is on responding to that claim and supporting the delivery of an outcome to this independent process.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) have conducted an extensive search of The National Archive’s (TNA) search engine, Discovery, and have been unable to locate any further MOD records relating to Chinook ZD576 being listed as closed to the public.
The MOD can confirm there are records that reference Chinook ZD576 which have been transferred to TNA, closed to the public, by other Government Departments.

We had a saga, with the Department claiming for years that it was pilot error, only to have then to reverse that decision, and we still do not have the truth. There are still documents locked away for 100 years, and families are crying out for the truth. They hear talk about the Hillsborough law and a duty of candour, but why are the Government continuing to cover up on this issue, particularly on the question of mechanical unfitness?

The hon. and learned Gentleman is right that tomorrow is a very sad anniversary. I am sure that he will be aware that members of my own corps sadly lost their lives in that crash. My ministerial colleagues and I have met with the families and heard the challenges they have faced, and I am very sympathetic to them. I would gently say that where documents are closed for reasons relating to personal information, that is something that we have to respect, as there are other people involved here. But I continue to meet with the families as required, and I am sympathetic to their situation.
