I beg to move,
That this House has considered standards for bus stops.
It is a pleasure to serve under your chairship, Sir Alec. This is my first time leading a Westminster Hall debate, and there was a degree of excitement in my office last week when the email arrived, alongside another...

My hon. Friend is absolutely right about the location of bus stops. I am so frustrated when I have taken the train to Cambridge, arrive at the station, see the bus, but have to walk 200 yards around the platform, come out of the station and walk 200 yards back...

My hon. Friend has a very snazzy station these days. Cambridge station has much improved over the period he has been the Member of Parliament. Having integrated transport matters. The Government’s strategy, Better Connected, talks to the fact that people use more than one form of public transport, so getting...

I commend the hon. Lady for securing the debate. It might be her first Westminster Hall debate but it will certainly not be her last—there is another on 2 November and more to come. I congratulate her on addressing the importance of improving the accessibility of bus stops. We need...

The hon. Gentleman makes a good point. I want to encourage as many people as possible to use our bus stops and buses. Seating is important because waiting in comfort makes it more likely that people will choose to use a bus. I am concerned about accessibility, but I also...

I recall, as a shadow Minister, visiting a major institution in the country and sending the management into panic when I asked them where the bus stop was to get back to the station. They had to go and ask the cleaner, and the cleaner told me, “You won’t find...

That is an anecdote that my hon. Friend tells often, and I absolutely agree with him. At completely the other end of the spectrum, I got the train to Stockport recently to make an onward journey to Manchester, for reasons I am sure most Members can understand. When I got...

Consular services are accessible 24/7, and our staff work tirelessly to support British people around the world, considering every case individually. We will always raise reports of violence with host authorities wherever British nationals consent for us to do so. Our Travel Advice helps British nationals make informed decisions about overseas travel and is kept under regular review to ensure it reflects the most important and up to date information. We encourage all travellers to check this before travelling. We also provide dedicated 'advice for women travelling abroad', which highlights specific risks and obstacles women may face. The safety of British nationals remains our main concern.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what steps the Government is taking to improve guidance for British travellers regarding health and safety risks abroad.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what steps the Government is taking to improve guidance for British travellers regarding health and safety risks abroad.
In 2024-25, the last full financial year for which data is available, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) answered over 400,000 requests for consular support from British nationals overseas, and provided detailed consular assistance in over 22,000 cases, including giving support to families of more than 6,000 British nationals who had died abroad, and 3,500 who had been hospitalised.
Consular and crisis support is available 24/7 through our contact centre and global network. We keep our Travel Advice under constant review so it reflects our assessment of risks to British nationals overseas, including health, safety and security risks; it was viewed more than 31 million times last year. In 2024-25, 85% of service users were satisfied with the service received. Extensive further information about consular services is published on GOV.UK and in the FCDO's annual report.
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what she plans to implement the timeline is for launching the WhatsApp passenger support service during disruptions to Thameslink services; and what assessment she has made of the staffing levels required to ensure timely responses to passengers using it.

GTR will introduce WhatsApp as a customer support channel, in phases over summer and autumn 2026.
This will happen via a 1 to 1 chat function, providing customer relations support and broadcast messaging to improve real time information delivery.
The improvements that GTR are making to the support they provide to customers will be delivered by the existing teams within GTR.
The Department has not made an assessment of the potential merits of providing UV index alerts on public information boards at transport hubs. UV guidance and forecasts are published by the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office. They are included in TV and radio weather reporting and can be readily accessed on a range of weather apps.

What recent assessment her Department has made of the potential merits of providing UV index alerts on public information boards at transport hubs.
One of the key findings of the recent beauty, hair and wellbeing all-party parliamentary group UV safety report was that the public do not fully understand the UV index. With evidence showing that over 86% of skin cancer is entirely preventable, the report recommends that daily UV ratings be widely advertised across communities, including transport hubs. Will the Minister meet me to discuss how that could help to educate and protect the public, and ultimately save lives?

I know my hon. Friend is producing a report on this critical matter and I would be very glad to meet her to discuss its findings. We ought to take every opportunity to ensure that people understand the impact of UV on their skin health, so I look forward to meeting her to discuss those findings further.

I thank the Minister for that answer and the hon. Member for Neath and Swansea East (Carolyn Harris) for bringing this issue forward. She always brings forward incredible issues for us all to be aware of. The figures for skin cancer in Northern Ireland are rising, and she has brought UV index alerts to the Minister’s attention. It is important that he takes action after discussing the matter with the hon. Lady, but after that meeting will he convey his thoughts to the relevant Minister in Northern Ireland to ensure that Ministers there do the same thing that the hon. Lady wants? If she wants it, then, in my opinion, we should support her.

The hon. Member is right to say that skin cancer affects people across the United Kingdom and we need to work as one United Kingdom to deal with it. I will certainly take what I learn from my meeting with my hon. Friend the Member for Neath and Swansea East and reflect it through to colleagues in both the Department of Health and Social Care and the devolved Administrations, including in Northern Ireland.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has completed the roll out of the very latest colour customer information screens, that also feature British Sign Language, on the main departure boards at York and Newcastle stations. LNER will replace customer information screens on platforms throughout these stations over the next two years. In addition, new ticket vending machines will transform how information is delivered, featuring dual-screen technology for an improved customer experience. This remains on track to be delivered by Spring 2027.
