To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether his Department has made an assessment of the quality of the facilities and infrastructure at Aston railway station.
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether his Department has made an assessment of the quality of the facilities and infrastructure at Aston railway station.
As with all stations on the West Midlands Trains network, Aston station is subject to regular audits and inspections as part of a Service Quality regime under the National Rail Contract. Along with nearby Witton, Aston station serves the local football stadium at Villa Park and I know their CEO has recently written to my Rt Hon Friend the Transport Secretary to discuss increasing capacity at the station on matchdays. It is fully accessible, with lift access from the platforms to street level and, as well as having CCTV and ticket purchasing facilities, has recently been fitted with new digital customer information screens.
That this House notes that the Post Office notified customers of the Coal Aston Post Office of the consultative arrangements over the proposed closure of their local branch on 1st September and informed them of the final closure decision on 28th October, with the closure date announced as being 6th December; is astonished now to see that the closure notice was pre-printed in March 2003, six months prior to the supposed consultation period; and believes that the Post Office failed in its duty of care in not conducting a genuine consultation and that the branch should remain open so that a decision on its future can be sent to an independent body outside the Post Office for adjudication.

That this House is deeply concerned that the work of the National Consultative Team at the Post Office in considering representations made about proposed branch closures is nothing but a sham; is concerned that a typical letter sent out to local residents opposing the proposed closure of their Post Office in the parliamentary constituency of North East Derbyshire contains lengthy arguments in favour of the closure programme indicating that no special circumstances exist in their case and that their representations have already been dismissed; believes that it is not good enough for 80 per cent. of a Post Office letter supposedly relating to a current consultation process to prejudice the outcome; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry to ensure that no decision is made about the future of the Coal Aston branch until a genuine and open assessment is made of the substantial representations which have been made.

That this House salutes the action of the Reverend Keith Sinclair in arranging for the church bells of Aston to toll from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday 21st March in protest at the attempt by Sky Televison to re-arrange the timing of the Aston Villa football match to coincide with church services to the inconvenience of churchgoers; and expresses its alarm at the way in which Sky Television seeks to buy up television sports coverage and arrange the timing of fixtures to suit its own commercial purposes.
