Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Ian Gibson (Labour), on Thursday, 13 June 2002, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 78 members in total.

PAY FOR STAFF IN HIGHER EDUCATION

That this House believes that higher education staff should be congratulated for maintaining high levels of quality in teaching and research while significantly increasing the number of university students; notes that this achievement occurred through a time of serious under-funding of higher education; further notes that academic pay has risen by just seven per cent. since 1980 while average earnings have increased by 44 per cent.; therefore calls on the Government to increase public investment in higher education in the spending review; and urges university employers to reward their staff with a significant pay rise in the current pay negotiations with the Association of University Teachers and other trade unions.
