Proceeding contribution from Chuka Umunna (Labour) in the House of Commons on Monday, 23 May 2011. It occurred during Urgent question on Injunctions.
Injunctions
I should like to return to the response to the question asked by my hon. Friend the Member for Middlesbrough (Sir Stuart Bell). Although it is right that we do not have a strict separation of powers in this country, we adhere to the principle to some degree as it is accepted that we write the laws and the courts interpret and apply them. In that context, does the Attorney-General agree that Members of this House should exercise extreme caution when, as we have in some senses just witnessed, they take it on themselves to breach court orders using parliamentary privilege when they are not fully apprised of all the evidence in the way that the judges who hear the cases are? We have the power, after all, to change the law if we see fit.
