Aviation: Air Quality

Question: To ask Her Majesty’s Government how they will address the potential safety hazard to airline passengers and crew shown by the Cranfield University research into cabin air quality where crews were reported to be failing to use emergency oxygen during possible contaminated air events.

Answer: I refer the noble Countess to the Written Statement made on 10 May 2011 (Official Report, col. WS 37). The information available has been published in the Cranfield University report. The next step is for the research studies, which the Department for Transport has commissioned, to be referred to the Committee on Toxicity. This will be done once the final study—swab test research—has been completed by the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Edinburgh.
