Aviation: Air Quality

Question: To ask Her Majesty’s Government how the Committee on Toxicity determine the dose of a toxic chemical when its vapour is inhaled in an enclosed space such as an aeroplane cabin or flight deck over a period of several hours.

Answer: I refer the noble Countess to the Written Statement made on 10 May 2011 (Official Report, col. WS 37). The information available has been published in the Cranfield University report. The next step is for the research studies, which the Department for Transport has commissioned, to be referred to the Committee on Toxicity. This will be done once the final study—swab test research—has been completed by the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Edinburgh.
