Proceeding contribution from Lord Roberts of Llandudno (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Lords on Tuesday, 18 October 2005. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee proceeding on Commissioner for Older People (Wales) Bill [HL].

Commissioner for Older People (Wales) Bill [HL]

I accept the welcome support of the noble Lord, Lord Roberts of Conwy. The need for Amendment No. 25 was drawn to our attention by the Law Society, which would like to see this paragraph in the Bill. It is a move in the direction of the elimination of elder abuse. Amendment No. 26 refers to,"““a champion of older people by stimulating and enabling opportunities for them to participate and contribute to their communities””," as well as,"““the development of fair access””." The need for these amendments has been drawn to our attention by the RNIB, which feels that sometimes access is not equal for those who are visually impaired. People from the Stroke Association speak in the same way. Let us give credit to the Government: there have been remarkable developments in access for people who have disabilities. We ask that that continues and we suggest that the commissioner having these responsibilities would be an additional spur to continued progress.
