Proceeding contribution from Lord Hunt of Wirral (Conservative) in the House of Lords on Monday, 15 January 2007. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee proceeding on Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Bill.

Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Bill

I would not like to designate the Minister as zero, but he will recognise that he has not had many friends and colleagues supporting his case, which is the point being made by the noble Lord, Lord Lee. There is still time. We urge the Government to focus on this issue which is at the heart of the debate. We want to see a clear and effective law making it a vital part of the criminal law that organisations cannot cause someone to die through their gross negligence, falling far below the duty of care that would reasonably be expected in those circumstances. I believe the case has been made. We have not yet made the progress we would wish, but I believe we will eventually win the day when the Government begin to concede that all sides of the Committee are in favour of these amendments. In the mean time, with considerable reluctance, I beg leave to withdraw the amendment. Amendment, by leave, withdrawn. [Amendments Nos. 27 to 33 not moved.] Clause 2 agreed to.
