Proceeding contribution from Jeremy Browne (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 29 April 2008. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee of the Whole House (HC) on Finance Bill.

Finance Bill

I am grateful for that intervention, because the hon. Lady made a criticism that the Government have not allocated anything like enough money to reflect the scale of their policy. However, I have not heard financial commitments from the Conservative party to fund such policies. The Conservatives seem extremely reticent about giving hard, cast-iron financial assurances that are designed to change behaviour and reduce CO2 emissions in this country. I have seen the leader of the Conservative party riding his bike to this building, with an England flag on the back of it when England is doing well in football matches. I know that he has a propeller on his roof that does not work. I have seen all that imagery and gimmickry from the Conservative party, but I have not seen any concrete policies. On the contrary, the hon. Lady, whenever she makes a political point at the Government's expense in this Chamber—a legitimate thing for her to do—says that the Government's efforts, which I accept are timid and insufficient, will not make any difference, or make only a negligible one. Her conclusion seems to be that the Government should not be venturing down that path at all. However, perhaps she would like to intervene to say that the Conservative party's position is that vehicle excise duty rates and petrol taxation should be much higher and the number of wind farms should be much greater.
