Proceeding contribution from Lord Hain (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 10 March 2011. It occurred during Grand Committee proceedings (HC) on UK Government's Energy Policy.

UK Government's Energy Policy

My hon. Friend, who is an expert in such matters, given his shadow ministerial role, has raised an important issue, on which the Secretary of State and the Energy Minister might like reflect. Now is the wrong time to be making things even worse for hard-pressed families in Wales by hiking up VAT on fuel. The Chancellor should admit that he got it wrong and reverse the VAT rise on petrol now. In communities with limited public transport infrastructure, such as my constituency, many people have no choice but to drive, especially now that they can no longer take a local job for granted.
