Proceeding contribution from Owen Smith (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 30 March 2011. It occurred during Grand Committee proceedings (HC) on The Budget.
The Budget
There is a simple answer to that and it is where the analogy between a business and the national economy falls down. In respect of the national economy, one can borrow over a far longer term and at much lower rates than a business can. We had our debt serviced over 14 years. That is what allows us, under a Keynesian understanding of economics, to invest in order to grow.
