The Budget
I challenge the hon. Gentleman to look at the evidence for the previous iteration of enterprise zones. The Centre for Cities report clearly states that they were not efficient and that the cost per job generated through them was around £26,000 on current prices. He should compare that with the independently verified figure of £6,500 per job in the future jobs fund. Enterprise zones are a rehashed idea, and the idea did not work terribly well in the past, so I am not sure that we should set such faith in it in the future.
