Bank Notes: Design

Question

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what (a) formal and (b) informal discussions her Department has had with the Bank of England on the proposals to replace historic figures on banknotes with wildlife imagery.

Answer

There have been no formal or informal discussions between HM Treasury and the Bank of England on the design of the H-series of banknotes, beyond the Bank of England at the point of announcement informing HM Treasury of its plans.

As set out in the Memorandum of Understanding between HM Treasury and the Bank of England, the Bank of England is entirely responsible for the design, production, issue and distribution of banknotes.
