Written statement made by Lord True (Conservative) on Thursday, 30 March 2023 in the House of Lords, on behalf of the Leader of the House of Lords.

Machinery of Government

My Rt Hon Friend the Prime Minister has made the following statement.

I am making this statement to bring to the House’s attention the following Machinery of Government changes.

The Government Debt Management Function will move from the Cabinet Office to HM Treasury, to sit alongside the centre for the Government Finance Function. This will improve the management of debt owed to the government and provide strong expertise and leadership for the public servants in its profession.

Ministerial responsibility for the Fraud Act 2006 will move from the Ministry of Justice to the Home Office. This will enable a single department to hold responsibility for policy and legislation relating to fraud against individuals and businesses, enabling the Home Office to best tackle fraud and reduce inefficiencies. The Home Office will continue to liaise with the Public Sector Fraud Authority, which sits across Cabinet Office and HM Treasury, in relation to tackling public sector fraud.

Both Machinery of Government changes will take effect immediately.
