The UK has had a Naval Base in Bahrain since the 1950s. The base provides naval and logistics facilities that are used by British Forces and that support our basing and operations in the Gulf region. Negotiations to further enhance and improve these existing facilities with the Government of Bahrain commenced in September 2012.

The Ministry of Defence's levels of readiness are based upon the Defence Strategic Direction and set out in the Defence Plan. This requires the Army to have a variety of forces at a series of graduated levels of readiness in order to be prepared for operations. There are sufficient armoured fighting vehicles available to support the deployment of these units. We do not routinely comment on specific levels of readiness for individual capabilities as to do so would compromise operational security, or would or would be likely to, prejudice the capability, effectiveness or security of the Armed Forces.

It has. The Arrangement which the UK signed with Bahrain concerning naval basing also changed the jurisdiction arrangements that apply to UK military personnel who are serving in Bahrain. From 1994 until 2014, the UK had exclusive jurisdiction over military personnel in Bahrain. This changed when the basing Arrangement was signed. As a result there is now concurrent jurisdiction, which recognises that both UK and Bahraini law applies to UK military personnel serving in Bahrain. The Arrangement contains a mechanism to allow the UK and Bahraini authorities to determine which set of national laws should be applied to a member of the UK Armed Forces if it is alleged that they have committed a crime.

The improvement of the existing facilities will support the Ministry of Defence and other Government Department's in the furtherance of British interests in the region. The facilities will be used by Royal Navy vessels specifically assigned to the region and those that pass through as part of other global deployments.

There are no concerns with regard to the supply of spares for Tornado aircraft being used for airstrikes on Iraq. Routine and priority spares demands are being satisfied within agreed supply chain pipeline times.
