That this House congratulates the workers of British Steel Cable Street Rolling Mills in their resolute opposition to the closure of their works which British Steel Engineering Steels recognise produce excellent products at competitive prices and which have shown profits in recent years; and therefore calls upon British Steel to withdraw their closure proposals, retain the dedicated workforce and quality products and continue with their historical presence in Wolverhampton which has served the British iron and steel industry admirably and efficiently over many years.

That this House notes that the postcode/weather station system used to trigger cold weather payments is completely arbitary; especially draws to attention the position in Wolverhampton where part of the borough is monitored from Shawbury in Shropshire and the adjoining part is monitored from Birmingham Airport fifty miles south in Warwickshire where consistently warmer temperatures are recorded with the consequence that people at risk from hypothermia and experiencing the same ambient temperature as nearby neighbours do not qualify for the same cold weather payment; and calls upon the Government to bring common sense to bear on this farcical situation which is unnecessarily putting life at risk.

That this House congratulates Wolverhampton Community Health Council on its formal objection to the closure of Penn Hospital, Wolverhampton; and calls upon Wolverhampton District Health Authority to include Penn Hospital in its long-term plan for residential health care provision in its recently published document Care for the Elderly.
