The Leader of the House may not know this, but when I first received my cancer diagnosis just after the last election, I thought it was the end of the world; that I would be unable to carry on my job of representing the people of Huddersfield, and doing all...

Will the Secretary of State and her team pay much more attention to the science and innovation possibilities in the hydrogen sector—that is, hydrogen energy and power? This is something we are good at, and the research is there. We need to be there quickly before the Chinese dominate the market.

I gently say that the hon. Gentleman should pay attention to the hydrogen strategy, which shows we are leaning forward and ensuring that we can capture the investment, de-risk any of the testing and ensure that intellectual property can be commercialised here in the UK. We of course see hydrogen in the mix in our future energy spectrum.
I should declare an interest, in that I have a long-standing experience and love of the higher education system. I also co-chair the Higher Education Commission with Lord Norton.

That this House notes the science-based campaign For Life On Earth which is critical of avoidable experiments on animals; further notes Patients Campaigning For Cures, which opposes animal models on medical grounds; is alarmed that scientific studies reveal that the widespread claimed ability of animals to predict human responses to drugs and disease is demonstrably false; acknowledges that over 90 per cent of drugs which test well in animals harm or otherwise fail humans, and that ignoring this has delayed cures, including penicillin; notes that using animals to model humans also contradicts currently-accepted science, including evolutionary biology and genetics, which supports personalised medical care; further acknowledges the proclamation of the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research to develop communications with the media and the public; and calls for a thorough, properly moderated public scientific debate on the misleading and costly practice of trying to apply results from animal experiments to human patients.

I do not want to ruin the Minister’s Christmas celebrations, which are imminent, but if he looks at the deplorable investment in research and development—the figures that came out only this week—does he not see that he needs to wake up and smell the coffee? The fact of the matter is that research and innovation will be deeply damaged by leaving the European Union. He should ask the universities what they think.

I know that the hon. Gentleman will welcome the Government’s commitment to research and development, which was underscored in the autumn statement with a further £2 billion by the end of this Parliament—perhaps the biggest single increase in R and D expenditure by any Government in the memory of anyone in this Parliament.
To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, if he will ensure that the science budget will be maintained in real terms.
To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, if he will ensure that the science budget will be maintained in real terms.
This Government has made a long term science capital commitment investing £6.9bn in the UK’s research infrastructure up to 2021.
Future allocations for science resource funding will be determined at the forthcoming Spending Review.
Does my hon. Friend agree that this debate is on so-called control of mainland badgers? Will he please address the intervention by the hon. Member for Tiverton and Honiton (Neil Parish)? This is about scientific evidence; the scientific evidence from Lord May and the breadth of scientific opinion in this...

That this House congratulates Katherine Lister (Greenhead College), Scarlett Harris (Godalming Sixth Form College), Matthew Johnston (The Judd School) and Anna Sozanska (St Leonards-Mayfield School) on their recent achievement in having been elected to represent the UK at the International Biology Olympiad in July which is being held in Switzerland; notes that over 4,200 students took part in the first round of this competition and that 155 students with the highest scores took part in the more demanding second round and that the four winning students were chosen from the top 16 students, who competed at the British Biology Olympiad final held at the University of Reading last week; wishes the UK team all the very best; and congratulates the Society of Biology and the UK Biology Competitions Special Interest Group for its key role in organising this competition.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what assessment he has made of the level of uptake of residential experiences by students studying geography and science in secondary schools in areas with multiple deprivation following the introduction of pupil premiums.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what assessment he has made of the level of uptake of residential experiences by students studying geography and science in secondary schools in areas with multiple deprivation following the introduction of pupil premiums.
[126900]
Information on residential experiences for school pupils studying either geography or science is not collected centrally. Schools are free to deploy their pupil premium funding as they wish, as school leaders and teachers are the professionals best placed to understand and respond to the individual educational needs of their disadvantaged pupils. This will include, in appropriate cases, supporting disadvantaged pupils' attendance on field trips and residential study opportunities.
At the same time, Ofsted have an increased focus on the performance of pupils who attract the premium, and on how it is used to remove barriers to learning for premium pupils. Since September 2012, as part of routine school inspection, Ofsted holds school leaders to account by looking at how schools have spent their pupil premium and at their rationale. Inspectors will examine what difference this is making to the learning and progress of the pupils concerned. Their judgments on schools' leadership will consider their use of both the premium and other resources to overcome barriers to achievement for their pupils.
Indeed. Would the Minister accept that the withdrawal of funding for the Women into Science and Engineering campaign is not a good idea if we are to be serious about getting more women into engineering and science?

No, I do not recognise that point at all. The employer ownership pilots are doing precisely the opposite in the first round. We are looking for more innovative, thoughtful and new ways of ensuring that funding gets to the right places, including to women, where their representation in a particular sector is low.
That this House notes with concern that, as documented in the recent book entitled, A Thorn in Their Side: The Hilda Murrell Murder, by her nephew,Commander Robert Green, Royal Navy (retired), key forensic and other evidence was not disclosed at the 2005 trial and the 2006 appeal of Andrew George, who was convicted for the abduction and murder of the internationally renowned rose grower and anti-nuclear campaigner Hilda Murrell in 1984; further notes Michael Mansfield QC's view that the book raises serious and substantial doubts about the criminal investigations to date into this controversial murder; supports Mansfield's call for a Commission of Inquiry or a reinvestigation by another police force unconnected with any previous inquiries into the case; further notes the overwhelming endorsement of the same at public meetings in Shrewsbury and London in March 2012; recommends that all the relevant papers should now be published by the Home Office, the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Sizewell B Inquiry, the Atomic Energy Authority, the West Mercia Police and the Northumbria Police; andfurther recommends that all these matters should be examined by the House of Commons Justice Committee.

Westminster Hall adjournment debate on postgraduate education.
It is a pleasure to speak in Westminster Hall again, Mr Hollobone, but under your chairmanship for the first time. I hope that I will not need much calling to order during my remarks. The Minister knows about my long-term interest in higher education and so do my colleagues. I...

It is good to get that on the record. Of course, there is barely a page in the Browne report about the postgraduate world. We desperately need to consider postgraduate education, because higher education can only be considered holistically. Where do we get our students from? What are the qualifications...

I think the Minister has gone as far as we can persuade him to go. Perhaps there is time for reflection, because there was almost nothing about postgraduate research in the White Paper, and perhaps this is an opportunity to cover that. If the higher education sector is not considered...

I am happy to do that. The research councils are a brave body of men and women, and they are going through tough times, because they are eking out research grants to many people who need and deserve them. It is a tough time to be entering the postgraduate world....

My hon. Friend is absolutely right, and that is why I keep pleading for higher education to be considered holistically through the career path of senior researchers and academics to retirement, and to consider the demographics of that. My hon. Friend makes the strong point that we must keep refreshing...

Where can we get hold of that letter? We would like it urgently. I also remind the Minister, who always mentions that I studied under Michael Oakeshott, that I was also taught by Ralph Miliband.

I do not want to be very party political today, but I will be party political in the sense that I still do not think that that is good enough. There is a problem with overall cuts in funding. The view that we are all in it together and so...
