The Department for Education does not therefore hold this information and has not provided guidance on caseloads. Anthony Douglas, the chief executive of CAFCASS, has written to the hon. Member and a copy of his response has been placed in the Libraries.Letter from Anthony Douglas CBE, dated 24 April 2012:"I am writing to you in order to provide answers to the Parliamentary Questions that you tabled recently:""105104: To ask the Secretary of State for Education, how many family court advisers are employed by the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS) in each CAFCASS region.""Please see the following table which indicates the head count for Family Court Advisors (FCAs) in each Cafcass service area on 23 April 2012."
"105107: To ask the Secretary of State for Education, whether his Department has issued guidance to the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service on the maximum number of cases to be allocated to each family court advisor at any one time.""While Cafcass has not issued any guidance to its staff which specifies, the maximum number of cases that may be allocated at any one time, we have been operating a trial workload weighting system, in agreement with our recognised trade union partners, NAPO and Unison. This system is based on ascribing a points 'weighting' to the various types and stages of family court cases in which Cafcass is involved. The total points value for each member of staff is then given a red/amber/green banding, with the expected being that staff should generally operate within or close to the green 'expected' range, rather than remain in the red or amber ranges.""Though the formal trialling of this workload weighting tool ended in September 2011, we have continued to monitor the workloads of staff using this tool, and we have recently agreed with the unions that a revised version of the tool is to be implemented, with effect from 1 June 2012."

Cafcass is unable to isolate the Stoke related complaints from those that originate from the much larger Staffordshire (including Stoke-on-Trent) area. Therefore, Cafcass cannot answer the question in relation to the specific terms in which it is put.""Please see the table below which indicates the total number of Complaints in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire since 2006. This has been provided alongside the National Cafcass figures."

HL15980 Lord Wills: To ask Her Majesty's Government how many cases the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service have allocated to self-employed practitioners in each quarter since the first quarter of 2007.
Please see the table below which indicates the number of cases allocated to self-employed contractors for each quarter between 2007 to 2011.
"Please note:""1. Figures in the above table are provided from the CAFCASS national case management system (CMS) The unit of measurement is a case, upon its receipt by CAFCASS from the Court and its entry into CMS. A case can have multiple ""applications and an application can involve multiple children. CMS is a live system and any late entries will be accounted for at the time of release of subsequent updates to this data.""2. If a case was allocated more than once in a different quarter, it will be counted each time in that quarter."

This is an operational matter for which Cafcass is responsible. I have asked Cafcass's chief executive, Anthony Douglas, to write to the hon. Member with this information. A copy of his reply will be placed in the House Libraries.The Public Accounts Committee raised concerns about the level of sickness absence among Cafcass staff at its hearing on during its 2010 enquiry, Cafcass's ““Response to Increased Demand for its Services””. At the end of May 2011 there were 13 unallocated public law care cases out of a total caseload of 12,779, and 268 unallocated private law cases out of a total caseload of 26,881. The following table shows the size of caseload and the number of unallocated cases for each CAFCASS operational area.
Data are taken from the CAFCASS management system as a snapshot on 31 May 2011.

The Family Justice Review panel's recommendations on the future of court social work services form part of its interim proposals, published in March 2011. The panel is conducting a wide-ranging consultation on these proposals before presenting its final report in the autumn. The Government will consider these final recommendations before deciding how to implement reforms to the family justice system.

CAFCASS practitioners are required to have a Diploma in Social Work, or an equivalent recognised by the General Social Care Council. They are also required to have a minimum of three years post-qualifying experience in social work with children and families at risk.
