Aviation: Air Quality

Question: To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to the Written Answer on 14 June (WA 169) by Earl Attlee, whether protection of the health of passengers includes protecting them from the effects of fume events.

Answer: The Government take the health of air crew and passengers extremely seriously. That is why we have put in hand a number of research studies looking into cabin air quality. The main research was published by Cranfield University on 10 May 2011. It found that, with respect to the conditions of flight that were experienced during the study, there was no evidence for target pollutants occurring in the cabin air at levels exceeding available health and safety standards and guidelines. Moreover, levels observed were comparable to those typically experienced in domestic settings.
