Proceeding contribution from John Denham (Labour) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 28 June 2005. It occurred during Debate on bill on Identity Cards Bill.

Identity Cards Bill

I believe that the country needs an identity card system and a national identity register and I will vote for the Bill. I want to spend most of my limited time on the way in which the Government may find a way forward after tonight’s vote, so I do not want to rehearse all the arguments for the principle of an identity card scheme. However, the critics of the scheme overstate the amount of intrusion that it implies. The register will carry less information than private companies. For example, the amount of information held on those who have a Nectar card is far greater.
