Proceeding contribution from Lord Christopher (Labour) in the House of Lords on Wednesday, 24 May 2006. It occurred during Committee proceeding and Debate on bill on Animal Welfare Bill.
Animal Welfare Bill
I am glad to hear that, but the test that should be applied is not in this proposal. It lies in the number of birds which are provided to be shot and the number of people who are paying to shoot. My impression is that there are a number of people whose interest is not in pheasants, but in their preference for a live target. I hope we can have some assurances that the code will cover the waterfront here and that it will be followed. Otherwise, as I said in the debate last week, this will be another farming activity which lacks the sympathy of the public. It is important that the rural community counteracts that.
