Proceeding contribution from Stephen Hammond (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 13 December 2007. It occurred during Debate on bill on Crossrail Bill.

Crossrail Bill

My hon. Friend is right. I know that he was a valued member of the Select Committee. Crossrail is essential for London and the United Kingdom. It will enable London to remain a truly international, world city and the global leader in financial services. One can take economic estimates how one likes, but it is estimated that GDP could benefit by some £30 billion, of which £12 billion will go directly to the Treasury in tax receipts. I am sure that that is another reason for the Government’s support for the Bill. I have no doubt that Crossrail will significantly benefit the United Kingdom. Conservative Members wish the Bill a swift passage through the other place and beyond, so that the first sod can be cut.
