Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Bill [HL]

As I understand it, the proposed new subsection that is being introduced deals with persons who are not settled in the United Kingdom but who become members of the Armed Forces. I hope the Committee will forgive me if I consider the Minister’s reply in Hansard in some detail to see whether we shall return to it. I am most grateful to the noble and learned Baroness for her support on this; like her, I am puzzled by the purpose of these provisions. If it is indeed the intention, as the Minister said, that they should be brought in before the end of this year, why would the Government resist? Why would they need the provision, ""on or after the relevant day"," in Clause 40(4), which is the subject matter of Amendment 86, at all? If the Minister will forgive me, I will take this away and read at leisure what he said. Perhaps the Minister would like to add something.
