Proceeding contribution from Lord McKenzie of Luton (Labour) in the House of Lords on Thursday, 11 June 2009. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee proceeding on Welfare Reform Bill.

Welfare Reform Bill

I am grateful for that intervention. I would like to stress one other point. In this process, it is not the adviser who makes decisions on sanctions but the decision-maker. Therefore, there are training issues relating to advisers and the approach that they take, but there are also training issues for decision-makers. I hope that with that rather extensive consideration of a very important matter, the noble Baroness will feel able to withdraw her amendment, at least on this occasion. I take seriously the thrust of the comments about the potential benefits of having something more specific in the Bill.
