Bank Notes: Design

Question

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to the answer of 8 June 2026 to Question 4143 on Bank Notes: Design, whether the Government was previously represented on the Banknote Character Advisory Committee; and on what date that committee was discontinued.

Answer

The Banknote Character Advisory Committee advised the Governor of the Bank of England on the choice of field and character for the current £20 and £50 banknotes (Series G). The Committee is no longer active and has been replaced by the Banknote Imagery Advisory Group in 2025. The Terms of Reference for this group, including purpose, responsibilities and membership, can be found on the Bank of England website.

As set out in the Memorandum of Understanding between HM Treasury and the Bank of England, the Bank of England is entirely responsible for the design, production, issue and distribution of banknotes.

As such, the Government was not represented on the Banknote Character Advisory Committee.
