Proceeding contribution from Baroness O'Cathain (Conservative) in the House of Lords on Wednesday, 13 July 2005. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee of the Whole House (HL) on Equality Bill (HL).

Equality Bill [HL]

I thank the noble Lord. Of course I understand the obligation to obey the law of the land, but there should be some flexibility in terms of a practical solution for people employed beforehand. It is not exactly the same as thousands and thousands of police people. It would involve many fewer people. I would have thought that there could be some flexibility. I am disappointed but not surprised that the Government are not willing to accept my amendment. I do not intend to divide the Committee. Other issues were raised by each Member of the Committee who spoke, for which I am grateful. I shall take away my amendment, give it due consideration and consider whether I ought to return to the issue on Report. In the mean time, I beg leave to withdraw the amendment. Amendment, by leave, withdrawn.
