Compensation Bill [HL]

I am grateful to the Minister for those responses. I detect that there is general unanimity in the Committee. We have monitored and expressed concern about a number of practices being pursued against vulnerable people, and the increased stress levels caused by the sort of conduct that we have discussed. That is highlighted by the activities of certain claims management companies. We are all resolved in a determination to ensure that any harm or distress caused to vulnerable people stops now. The Minister recognises my impatience for action to be taken. I shall continue to stress that impatience, because I am very disturbed at some of the stories I hear. I detect that she is willing to find a way to exercise some discipline in the marketplace and some regulation now. Against that background, I very much welcome the assurances that she gave. We have discussed before whether the Competition Commission should have a referral by the OFT of the whole claims management industry. I detect widespread concern now at the way in which the industry has developed. No doubt that will be another debate on another occasion. In the mean time, I beg leave to withdraw the amendment.
