Proceeding contribution from Baroness Hanham (Conservative) in the House of Lords on Wednesday, 26 October 2005. It occurred during Committee of the Whole House (HL) and Debate on bill on Road Safety Bill [HL].

Road Safety Bill [HL]

I thank the Minister for that reply, which was a bit like a curate’s egg: half good and half bad. I understand the necessity for looking at the trials, but trials in other countries, which I identified, have all suggested that this is not something that brings more danger but is in fact safer, particularly for the motorcyclists themselves. We all know of motorcyclists—as my noble friend Lord Higgins said—particularly courier cyclists for some reason, who weave in and out of traffic on the road. In a bus lane they would not be able to do so in the same way. It is a road safety issue; I hear what the Minister says and for today’s purposes I beg leave to withdraw the amendment. Amendment, by leave, withdrawn.
