Proceeding contribution from Lord Darling of Roulanish (Labour) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 19 July 2005. It occurred during Debate on bill on Crossrail Bill.

Crossrail Bill

By happy coincidence, I was about to come to the cost, but, first, I wish to make a point directly relevant to the hon. Lady’s intervention. If we do nothing, there is a serious prospect that at some point in the next decade—or certainly the one after—London will not be able to carry the number of people who come into it. Of all the difficulties that London business faces, that would be the No.1. That is why, over the past few weeks, I have said to the House time and again that we must all ask how we can get more capacity out of the system, be it road or rail.
