Proceeding contribution from Baroness Morris of Bolton (Conservative) in the House of Lords on Monday, 21 July 2008. It occurred during Committee of the Whole House (HL) and Debate on bill on Education and Skills Bill.

Education and Skills Bill

I welcome the aspiration behind this amendment. As the noble Lord, Lord Avebury, rightly pointed out, children from the travelling community have considerable educational needs and will often require special help from their local education authority to realise their potential. The local education authority already has, as it has with all children, a duty to provide them with a high quality education. I support attempts to ensure that that happens. However, I have a concern about this proposal—that it may become an exercise in ticking boxes, which would distract from the much more important job of providing a high standard for everyone in a way that recognises the different needs of individuals.
