Proceeding contribution from Lord Bradshaw (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Lords on Monday, 5 December 2005. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee proceeding on Civil Aviation Bill.

Civil Aviation Bill

I support the amendment, because this sort of fairly long-term signal ought to be sent to the industry. As far as I am concerned, it could be longer, so long as there is a continual reduction. I hope that reductions will also apply emissions as well. To answer the last point made by the noble Lord, Lord Clinton-Davis, I am not particularly targeting British Airways or any other good operator. I am targeting the keeping in place of very old aircraft that, after their time in passenger service, go into freight service. They create huge amounts of noise around airports and are thoroughly objectionable to the local community. I hope that the noble Lord does not seek to pass off what I am saying as an attack on British Airways, which it is not. It is an attack on aircraft noise, particularly that made by older aircraft, often operated by the less reputable operators.
